Teamwork Makes the Dreamwork: Siblings and School

I love homeschooling. Not because of the freedom it gives us to explore and run and play outside. Not because I don’t have to set a six am alarm or rush to get my kids on the bus each morning. Not because of my ability to tailor lessons to each child’s needs.

I love homeschooling because it gives my children an opportunity to spend time together, to get to know each other and to serve each other.

My biggest blessing is also my biggest challenge.

Homeschooling multiple children is hard- I’m not going to lie to you. Some mothers can balance a brood of kids with grace and somehow manage to make it look easy.

I’m not that mom.

I’m the mom that struggles to accomplish everything on my to-do list. I’m the mom that gets frustrated with her brood. I’m the mom that knows I can’t do it on my own.

If I have learned one thing in my years teaching my kids at home, it’s this: homeschooling is easier when 1. You have the right tools for the job and 2. You have the help you need to get the job done.

Which gets me to the point of this post- moms of many- you are surrounded by helping hands. Use them!

My Littles use Time4Learning as their core curriculum. This program is the “right tools for the job” for us. Time4Learning is completely independent for my little kids. It’s animated and interactive. It’s fun.

My oldest kids love Time4Learning too, which helps, because often, one of them is tasked with helping their siblings stay focused and engaged in their lessons.

When Little Miss is supposed to do her Time4Learning, she often has a big sibling by her side. They sit with her and help her as she learns to control the computer mouse and help her choose which lessons to do next.

They are interested in her and the things she is learning, which helps her maintain her focus just a little bit longer than she would have if she had sat down on her own.

Working with their sister gives them an opportunity to show off all the things they know and help Little Miss want to learn more.

While they work on their lessons, I am free to do the dishes, or work with one of the other children, or (heaven forbid) put my feet up a second and check Facebook.

If you are looking for a way to ease your load, I recommend Time4Learning, especially for the K-2 crowd. I also recommend the buddy system and cutting yourself some slack. There is only so much time in the day, and your beautiful children enjoy spending time together. Have them work together, and use resources that make life a little easier for you.

You won’t regret it.
