Mayan Mysteries APP Review
Disclosure: I got this product as part of an advertorial.
Mayan Mysteries is an educational game from Dig-It Games. Last year, I reviewed it as a computer game, but this year, I am so excited to have had the chance to use the iPad version of the game. I really liked the iPad version, but I *love* the App form.
As an App, the game is more accessible to younger children, especially those with motor control issues (like my crew). The App, with the ability to touch, tap, and drag elements makes it easier for all of them to play.
Mayan Mysteries teaches children about the Mayan empire, archeology, and how archeologists learn about ancient civilizations, and preserve them for posterity.
Information is presented in comic book form, which my little boys love. The story line is that there are looters who have been stealing Mayan artifacts and selling them for profit. Mr. Q and the kids are working to find the looters, and stop them, while preserving the artifacts.
This game also packs a huge educational punch. It talks about geography and history, archeology, and science…. as well as requiring kids to read text for information, solve puzzles, and stretch their critical thinking muscles.
Also included are multiple choice questions, and plenty of reading, which makes this App almost stand on it’s own two feet as a unit study of Mayan Cultures. I would add some good historical fiction from the time period, and call it a wonderful homeschool unit!
Dig-It also has a Roman Town computer game which teaches all about the Roman Empire- if you are studying Ancients this year with the kiddos, check them both out!

We’ve only learned about the ancient Egyptians so far, but they were lots of fun!
