Guest Post: Back to School: Finding Time for Bible Time

Sharing is caring!

It’s time for another guest post! My pal Anne Marie from Future.Flying.Saucers has been featured on our Free Homeschool List for some time now, sharing her wonderful bible lessons. I was so excited when she wanted to guest post for us also- sharing how she makes time for bible study in her homeschool. In this post, she also shares even more free resources to make bible time easier to accomplish.

Even if you aren’t a religious homeschooler, she’s got some wonderful ideas that can be used in any home- finding time for peace, quiet, reflection, and thoughtful discussion is something all of us need to stay sane during the school year.

I hope y’all enjoy her post!

The rush is on! There are books and supplies to buy, clothes to try on, routines to establish, and rules to remember. There are association papers to fill out, co-op classes to design, and daily subject planning to write down.

Homeschool moms, we have a lot to do as we begin a new school year. Perhaps you do school year-round as I do, so you never really stopped. But if you are like me, there are still “beginning of school” emotions and activities we do as other families start the new year.

There is one thing you do not want to miss: Your time with Jesus.

Bible Time

In the midst of all the craziness, He is the Rock and the Strength needed to get through the day. But finding time to spend in quiet time with the Lord can be difficult.

So what do you do?

Many Bible teachers would say, “You should always begin the day with scripture and prayer!” Well, that’s all fine and dandy for those who are able to get up at 5:00am and not be awakened every 3 hours for baby feedings, or kids with nightmares, or going potty. But I do see their point. Spending time with Jesus as soon as possible in the morning can make your entire day change. But for a mom, especially one with little children, and possibly many of them, getting up before the kids wake up for quiet time is a dream.

Here are some tips I have found that help me spend time with Jesus when I can. I will not tell you that I perfectly do this everyday. Nope. I live a life. But I do attempt to put God and His ways first and seek His kingdom.

1. Walk and Talk: If you are able to get up before the kids, go for a walk and talk with Jesus. I have a mp3 player that I load up with praise music, podcasts, and encouraging books that teach me about my Lord. As I listen, Jesus and I discuss what I hear. Once my 30 minutes is over, I’m sad to leave my haven, but ready to face the day.

2. Devotion Time with the Kids: Who said that Bible time had to be an activity of one? On days when I can’t get out and walk, I try to make sure that I do not skip devotion time with my children. We have 2-3 Bible books we are in the middle of and we love to sit, read, and discuss the events of scripture. What a thrill it is to my heart when one of the kids says, “No! I want to read more! PLEASE?!?”

3. Teach Bible as a Subject: The Bible is not just a book of encouraging words, but it is history as well. When teaching ancient history, the scriptures must be taught or a HUGE part of education will be missed. Not only can you teach history, but you can teach geography, social studies, and politics. So much of what is happening in the middle east today is traced back to the Old Testament.

4. Family Bible Time: If your family is like mine, then Dad goes to work in the morning and doesn’t return until dinner. But I want my husband to teach the children the scriptures as well. We attempt to do a Family Bible Time. We do this after baths and the kids are ready for bed. The kids and I sit on the couch and my husband sits opposite us. Usually we read through a book of the Bible, one chapter, or section, at a time. My husband will ask questions about what he read and then we all circle around the ottoman and pray as a family.

5. Scriptures on the Move: We live about 15 minutes from town, so in the car is a great time to listen to scripture memorization songs, praise music, Christian radio, audio dramas, and books. Here are some that my children enjoy:

GT and The Halo
Express

The Brinkman
Aventures

Lamplighter
Theatre

6. Pray Without Ceasing: Scripture tells us to always be in an attitude for prayer. Perhaps you just received a phone call about a friend who is sick. Gather your children, share the request, and pray. One of the things my children will do on their own is pray aloud whenever they see an ambulance or fire truck with the sirens blaring. They pray for all of the people involved: those who might be hurt and those who are helping. Prayer is powerful. Make sure your children hear you pray on a regular basis.

There are so many things you can do to make sure that you are putting time with Jesus first. I love that being a Christian doesn’t mean just going to church, but that it is a relationship with the person of Jesus. The beginning of the school year is hectic, but with a little bit of creativity, you can show Jesus not just to your children, but to the world around you. After all, we are called to go to the nations and preach the gospel.

That begins with spending time with Jesus.

What types of activities do you do to spend time with Jesus?
